The subscription economy is changing the ownership paradigm.
People are moving from owning products to subscribing to services. By doing that, people can reduce the up-front cost of purchasing a product in favor of a longer relationship with the provider.

The provider has more time to show and prove the value generated by its products for the customer but, in exchange, it has more responsibility in ensuring long-term service quality over a 1-shot purchase.

The trend of the subscription economy is moving fast.

Standard sectors

We are all used to having several monthly subscriptions for those services touching recurring expenses (grossly called bills!). Every month we receive bills for mobile plans, broadband, energy&gas, bank account, credit cards, and mortgage.

Insurance products are, unlike other bills, more annual or biannual even if, in the last years, insurance companies are also trying to make it closer to standard bills with monthly billing or “pay-per-use” billing.

Digital content

Music-streaming and video-streaming subscriptions are the main actors of the last 6-8 years. Videogames and consoles are also getting very popular, together with podcasts and newsletters subscriptions.

Food&Grocery

Here is the real disruption. “Do we stay home or we go grab something outside?” if this was the only question to raise with friends, in the last 4-5 years we got an amazing new option, the DELIVERY. You can deliver almost everything at any time on different platforms. It’s now getting popular having “subscriptions” to specific platforms in order to waive delivery fees (Glovo or Deliveroo for instance)

Transportation

Something is moving also in this area. Bike and car sharing are useful for spot needs but the subscription model is also changing the ownership of vehicles for “recurring needs”. You can now have your own bike based on a subscription (check Swapfiets), as long as a car or scooter. You can choose a car brand and change the model every month based on the chosen subscription (check BMW).
